Tropical Sunset gift shop in Fort Myers Beach damaged by fire

FORT MYERS BEACH

Flames ripped through the roof of the Tropical Sunset gift shop in Fort Myers Beach early Thursday morning.

According to the Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District, the T-shirt and gift shop, located at 161 Old San Carlos Blvd. across from Times Square, suffered an accidental electrical fire around 1:30 a.m. A caution tape now wraps around the entire store, where most of the damage was done to the roof.

Fort Myers Beach Fire Chief Ron Martin said firefighters were able to contain the blaze quickly. Fire crews from Fort Myers Beach, Iona and Bonita Beach all arrived at the scene. No injuries were reported.

“When our crews arrived, we had light to moderate fire conditions,” Martin said. “Our crews were able to quickly contain the fire outside the structure.”

“The crews did an outstanding job,” said Martin. “It could have been a … significant potential economic loss, with stores that are connected to the structure involved in the fire.”

WINK News arrived around 3:15 a.m., at which time there was no flames or smoke.

The owner of Tropical Sunset says it’s a tragic situation for a family-owned store that opened in 1975. The owner of nearby South Seas Trader says that while his store hasn’t been damaged, the smell of fire smoke is present on some products.
