Maverick’s kids enjoy a back-to-school shopping spree at the Academy

With back to school fast approaching, that means store shelves are full of supplies. This draws parents’ attention to the fact that these things do not come easily for some children due to other expenses. Academy Sports and Outdoors partnered with the Maverick Boys and Girls Club of Amarillo to give seven students a school supply shopping spree on Tuesday.

“I love that the kids have the experience and choose to put on their own shoes. They feel special. They have the employees here who give them all that attention and help them find the supplies they love,” said Donna Soria, executive director of the Maverick Boys. and Girls Club.

Each child received an Academy Sports and Outdoors gift card with $100 and the freedom to choose different school supplies available at the Academy. Employees volunteered to accompany the children on their exciting adventure and help keep track of the money they had left.

“I was a Maverick kid. It’s so nice to come full circle and be able to help the kids because I used to be in their shoes,” said Academy team sports associate Sarah Victor. .

All attendees were full of smiles as they picked out their backpacks and new accessories for the year.

“These children have worked hard all summer and have excellent behavior. We reward all of our children; those seven really stood out,” Soria said.
